  Kathy J. Karlson, Ph.D.
Artist in Residence at Greenbelt Community Center in Maryland, her paintings are in more than 40 private collections, and for many years, she has exhibited in juried shows at Wilson Gallery in the District. A former member of A Salon Studio in Takoma Park, Maryland she has shown there, at Savage Mill, and in numerous other places. Karlson's focus on the histories of American art and architecture during her study for the M.A. and Ph.D. in American Studies from the University of Minnesota, is combined with her training in Art History. Karlson's paintings reflect layered sources of inspiration, from her interest in abstract expressionism, her upbringing near the prairie, to her years in the Peace Corps in West Africa. In 1998, Kathy Karlson was awarded an NEA grant for fiction writing, which has allowed her to devote more time to both writing and painting. Her stories have been published in Carve, Chiron Review, Madison Review, Worldview, Calyx, Stories With Grace, The MacGuffin, SNReview, 13th Warrior, and several other journals.
